Our research

We are now exploiting our unique biosensor technologies to study this problem. We are initially examining the mechanisms for the release of adenosine from the basal forebrain in vitro in coronal brain slices of the preoptic area by placing adenosine and ATP biosensors in areas of the basal forebrain such as the substantia innominata, while simultaneously recording neuronal and astrocytic activity with patch clamp electrodes and calcium imaging. We are demonstrating that least some of the mechanisms linked to sleep can be studied in brain slices in vitro. Ultimately our insights will aid new and better focussed experiments on physiological sleep.
